Few robotics categories are poised to benefit more from the events of the past year than construction. It’s a booming field that could benefit massively from automaton, a fact that’s only been amplified as the pandemic brought many nonessential businesses to a standstill. We’ve seen a number of players in the category raise notable rounds over the past year or so, including Toggle, Dusty, Scaled and SkyMul.
Founded in 2018, Houston-based Rugged Robotics raised a $2.5 million seed round back in 2019. While the company isn’t actively raising at the moment, it has already begun to roll out its technology in early pilots, including a partnership with Massachusetts-based construction-firm Consigli.

“We had a client that was pretty progressive looking,” said Consigli’s Jack Moran. “It’s a building where we were controlling the core shell of the project, as well as the fit-out, which was pretty complex — lots of odd shapes that would be a challenge for us.”
Rugged’s self-described “layout Roomba” was used to help build a 10-story building in Cambridge, Massachusetts, effectively drawing blueprints on the ground of the space that amounted to around 40,000 square feet per floor. The partnership effectively finds Rugged taking a key step from its early research and development mode to commercialize.
“The layout process is the most important task in the construction process,” Rugged founder and CEO Derrick Morse said in an interview with TechCrunch. “Marking where things are installed defines where things are built. A mistake made during layout trickles into the overall construction process and it results in rework, delays and additional expenses.”
The team is still small, with a headcount of around six full-time employees, including co-founders with backgrounds at NASA and Samsung. The team currently has three robots, with plans to expand to five. They print dot matrix ink patterns on the ground to give construction teams a real-world orientation for the buildings they’re creating.

A member of the Rugged team travels to the site with the robot to supervise the robot as it executes on its plans, with the startup charging the construction company through a RaaS (robotics as a service) model.
“We have insatiable customer demand,” said Morse. “We have several multibillion-dollar contractors that are excited to do pilots and demos with us. We’ll be growing the organization and fleet in the upcoming 12 months, and we’ll likely be bringing in additional capital to enable that growth.”

AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage – only slightly more violent. It’s a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on YouTube are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping – except that it doesn’t cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn’t cost you anything to click these links, and it’s a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!
A new rule will require companies traded on the Nasdaq Composite stock market index to meet requirements for diversity among their boards of directors, including the index’s many construction-related firms.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved a Nasdaq rule change on Aug. 6 that requires its listed companies to have diverse boards or release a statement on why they do not.
The new rule will require Nasdaq-listed companies to have at least two diverse directors, including one who identifies as a woman and another as an underrepresented minority or LGBTQ+. For companies with five or fewer directors, the rule requires only one diverse director.Nasdaq-listed companies will also be required to release board-level diversity statistics using this disclosure format.
Nasdaq found in a 2020 study that more than 75% of its listed companies did not meet the new proposed requirements, according to CNBC. The announcement received criticism from Republicans on the Senate Banking Committee, while Democrats on Capitol Hill and corporations such as Goldman Sachs and Microsoft have lauded the proposal.
Under the new rules, Nasdaq Global Select Market companies must have, or explain why they do not have, one diverse director by Aug. 6, 2023, and two diverse directors by Aug. 6, 2025, or the date the company files its proxy or information statement. Some of the largest Nasdaq-listed companies in the construction industry include:
Latham Group Inc.
TuSimple, ChampionX and Hyzon Motors have both at least one woman and one minority or LGTBQ board member. All of the top five biggest market cap Nasdaq-listed companies have at least one woman board member.
But the construction industry as a whole is already struggling with diversity in its workforce. Approximately 10.9% of construction industry members are women, while 6% are Black and 2% are Asian. About 30% are Latino, a demographic category of ethnicity, not race, according to 2020 Bureau of Labor statistics.
Around 72% of Black or African-American respondents and 66% of women respondents said they have experienced discrimination or prejudice in the commercial and residential building industries, according to a National Institute of Building Sciences survey.
The push for diversity in boardrooms comes at the same time as companies also focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) related investments. ESG is an investment approach that screens publicly traded companies for predefined objectives based on environmental, social and corporate governance criteria, and has been an increased focus of major institutional investors, such as BlackRock.
For example, Dallas-based construction giant AECOM announced in April a target for women to comprise at least 20% of senior leadership roles and at least 35% of the overall workforce. Other publicly-traded construction firms, such as Jacobs, Fluor, Balfour Beatty and Lendlease have also announced diversity and inclusion initiatives.
Hundreds of construction companies have also signed onto the Associated General Contractors of America’s (AGC) Culture of CARE initiative, which promotes diversity and inclusion in the construction industry.

Luke Johnson won’t be accused of avoiding controversy to gin up business for his fintech mortgage lending shop, Neat Capital. You might say he’s actively courting it.
“In the financial services community, most companies are afraid of taking an active voice in any community health issue, or any issue of importance because it is politicized and we work in a highly regulated environment,” Johnson said in an interview Thursday with HousingWire. “And we tend to say any noise is bad noise, even if it’s good for the community.”
Johnson’s company announced this week that it would offer a $500 discount to customers who show proof that they’ve been vaccinated.
About two-dozen mortgage loan originators wrote to HousingWire in response to the news. Many said they felt the company was out of bounds and should “stick to mortgage lending.” Some described the initiative as “disgusting,” “inappropriate,” “discriminatory,” “wrong,” and “un-American.”
Johnson is unfazed, and says that since the announcement was made, Neat’s phones have been ringing off the hook with new customers (as well as general members of the community who were supportive of the initiative).
Lisa Brockman, author of Out of Zion, is a six-generation Mormon whose journey took her from the faith of her Mormon ancestors to her conversion to Christianity. A friend’s simple question set her on that journey: “Lisa, how do you know the church is true?” Her initial reaction was to attempt to convert her friend, but he set out to introduce her to a Jesus she had never met. As she studied the Bible, she discovered a God that embodied love. Lisa came to realize she was powerless to save herself and needed a Savior who could offer her eternal life.
