The pergola goes up in the garden of the single house. Ross Trethewey takes a look at the latest in smart home technology. Ultra-modern cabinets are installed in the kitchen. A local craftsman puts the finishing touches on a dining table made of old cypress; At the Elliotborough house, Richard checks out the HVAC plan while repointing begins on the original fireplaces.

In the back garden of the single house, timber framer Bruno Sutter and his crew install a custom pergola built with the assistance of students from American College of the Building Arts.

Meanwhile, landscape architect Glen Gardner oversees the planting of hydrangeas.

Ross Trethewey tours a smart home that features voice-activated thermostat control, water sensor security systems and lighting with remote-control access and scheduling.

Back at the single house, Patrick Feery begins installing the European kitchen cabinets, factoring in the brick walls and slanted floors.

Kevin meets back up with the local craftsman who’s building a table out of cypress harvested from a river. After allowing it to dry for several weeks, today he’s shaping the edges, sanding and applying multiple coats of shellac.

Over at the Elliotborough house, Richard checks out the rough plumbing and HVAC installation.

On the first floor, Kevin finds mason Carlos repointing the original fireplaces.

Now that the house is open, Kevin can see the old wiring and plumbing.

Jeff shows studs placed farther apart than the traditional practice, decreasing the amount thermal bridges which allow for heat to escape. Kevin helps him build a wall with insulated headers. They also frame the corners differently to allow for more insulation. With a model of the new project house, Richard shows what sun exposure and ventilation can do to a building. He and Donald show the latest technology from the International Builders Show. Now that the project house is opened up inside, Jeff points out a plumbing error made long ago. Electrician Ben Giles shows old knob and tube wiring that was still in use until demo started. He will soon strip out all the old wiring.
